Traumatic Brain Injuries

The impact of TBI, traumatic brain injuries, on society is staggering. It is estimated that the cost of healthcare for patients with TBI amounts to at least $25 billion each year, not including in patient care. Those who suffer severe head injury almost never regain the full functioning that they possessed before the trauma, and about 2/3rds experiencing moderate trauma never fully recover. Luckily most cases of TBI are mild, occurring in about 75-80% of the cases. Brain trauma occurs to about 180-220 times out of a population of 100,000. That means that in a place like the U.S. with a population of about 300 million, there are 600,000 new cases of TBI each year. Unfortunately 10% of those result in death, and the rest receive hospitalization for their injury. The largest cause of TBI in the U.S. is from automobile accidents, including collisions between vehicles, cars hitting pedestrians, accidents on bicycles. After car accidents TBI is caused by falls, assaults, sports, and penetration of the skull with a sharp or other offending item.
